Friend, neighbour and sailor
Kars passed away last Thursday, he died of natural causes,
(in spite of strange rumours)!!!
The evening before, I met him, crossing the street walking with my two dogs.
Kars was coming back from walking with his adopted stray dog, (Guyot-square).
I suggested to him that we would walk for a while but he allready had taken
along walk with his dogs and liked to return to his ship.
With a little regret I followed my way, I allways enjoyed being with him.
My dogs are more than fond... of their big friend.
Kars persuaded me to take care of "Kleintje", the smallest puppy of a nest of dogs in need.
With Kars, and now passed on to his friends, it was all about saving:
The large wooden East Indian ship, once build to carry heavy rocks in Denmark(Stensoy) around 1901.
Still lying at the Noorderhaven in Groningen.
From the docks to his ship it is like a feast of flowers and people remembering the life and death of Kars Thaden.
Tear drops {;)}
The East Indian ship, belonging to the late Kars Thaden,
is more than a 100 years old.,
Except one bad spot, 30 cm above the waterline,
has standed the test of time.
We, the friends, and fellow citizens, of Kars,
would like to make his dream come true!
After repairing the bottom of the ship and replicating "the Heemskerck"
this ship would be a major sightseeing in the city of Groningen.
The ship would fit into the historical sight of Groningen.
(Pictures can be links to web pages, just click).
Last summer, Kars started to do the job himself
but he was hampered by the bad weather.
Looking on the outer side, just above the waterline, Kars resteaured allready some of the beauty of the ship.
Appearences may be conceiving but the "Heemskerck"is certainly worth saving.
Wooden ships need to be tarred,
if not than pumps need to be used..
This is a job that needs to be done a shore.
This was costing to much money, Kars preferred to spend it on the updecks
building of an East Indian ship and once in a while a good bottle of scotch.
Every one, who had a tour on board, saw the strenght of the ship
with oak woooden spants just 24 cm apart.
Not many captains can say this about their ship.
Unfortenaly, Kars has passed away, and that is why we ask your support.
